October 2005 Podcast

A significant number of persons with disabilities are not employed or are underemployed. A significant number of employers are not getting the most out of their people. Can these problems have a common solution? This conversation with ProGroup CEO Karen Stinson suggests they might. Accompanies the October 2005 ProGroup newsletter.

No Big Deal...or is it?

Despite the magnitude of this time for Jews, my guess is that there is little awareness of it in your workplace— perhaps a "don't ask, don't tell" attitude prevails. In other words, if you are not Christian, the majority religion in most workplaces, you just celebrate quietly, taking time off without much explanation.

Most of us who are Jews or Muslims or Hindus or Baha'i or the hundreds of other minority religions in the United States believe it's best to keep our practices to ourselves. Besides, this country is founded on separation of church and state. We keep religion out of our government and our workplaces, right?

But consider this...

ProGroup's recent enewsletter about religious holidays and the workplace contains valuable information for all levels of an organization.

Celebrate Diversity Month: Let's Make it Official

In 2002, the ProGroup team recognized a need to designate a specific month to focus all Americans on celebrating the diversity that exists within our workplaces, schools, and communities. We checked to see if Congress had officially designated a week or month for this purpose. It hadn't. While throughout the year a wide range of admirable diversity observances acknowledge the contributions and unique traditions of certain segments of our population (see sidebar), there is no official month to celebrate the wide range of diversity that includes not only these groups but that reaches out to everyone.

CEO Karen Stinson's July newsletter calls for an official Celebrate Diversity Month and asks your support

Will the "Real" People of Color Please Stand Up?

Despite the fact that universities and the media have created their own list of "standard" terminology, usage has changed over time and probably will continue to evolve, leaving us with no list we can be sure of. Historically, controlling groups have had the authority to label or name other groups. Today, ethnic and cultural groups demand the power to name themselves.

In the May newsletter, Will the Real People of Color Please Stand Up?, ProGroup President Myrna Marofsky explores a theme that many people struggle with every day: what do we call each other?

Flash Judgments

Flash Judgments™ diversity program for schools is a challenging tool for education. It can be a high impact staff development piece for everyone in the school community. Use it to train staff, teachers, bus drivers, custodians, specialists, administrators, cooks, support staff, and more. Flash Judgments™ can stand alone or be incorporated into other programming. It would also be a powerful parent or community program.

Not-So-Famous Women's History Month

Have you ever scanned the daily news and seen an obituary of a woman who was an outstanding community leader, invented something unusual, or led a small company and realized that this may be the only media attention this woman has ever received? Are there women in your workplace that cause you to take notice because they are visionaries, problem solvers, leaders, mentors, or role models? Are there women who show great strength and ability without concern for what they receive in return?

Myrna Marofsky celebrates Women's History Month with a look at the many women whose contributions should also be recognized during this time.
