Though I began Bikram yoga in an effort to alleviate physical discomfort, I was blessed to find the gifts reached much further, providing mental and spiritual fulfillment that touched my life in unimaginable ways. Three years ago, my doctor recommended trying yoga to ease a painful case of shingles caused by excess stress. After two pregnancies and some added baby weight, I hoped to shed a few pounds at the same time. A good friend highly recommended Bikram and I will be forever grateful. After trying everything from kickboxing to treadmill with meager results, I have now achieved my weight loss goal and feel stronger and healthier than I did before I ever had children. My first class was not a walk in the park, but the drive to one day achieve the postures with the grace of the front row masters kept me coming back for more! Even more compelling than my physical relief and weight loss is the effect Bikram has had on my ability to be present with my family: as a busy mother of two young children, I have often found myself thinking one day ahead, struggling to stay in the present. After working my body from the inside out in class, I feel a mental clarity as if a fog has been lifted. I am more relaxed, focused, and calm in stressful situations, which aids me in being a better mother and wife. My practice took a giant leap forward when I began cleaning the studio in exchange for free classes. Without the excuse of money worries, I found myself more committed to attending classes regularly, where previously I may have talked myself out of it, or convinced myself I was too busy. Attending classes regularly has brought my practice to a different level. Finally, the powerful voices from many amazing teachers over the years have provided direction and care, and watching the strength and dedication of the "regulars" gives consistent inspiration. I would like to thank David and Karen for adhering to such high standards and truly keeping BYD a home to practice yoga. I believe this yoga has so many health benefits, I'll still be going strong when I'm eighty! Namaste,
